November is National Pet Diabetes Awareness Month, and it’s important because many pet owners are still unaware that their pet can develop the disease. In fact, the American Veterinary Medical Association conservatively estimates that around 1 in every 500 dogs and cats may be affected, and that number is growing. While diabetes can occur in any pet and genetics do play a role, older dogs and cats have an increased risk of developing the disease.
Symptoms of diabetes can include:
- Lethargy
- Excessive thirst
- Frequent urination
- Increased hunger
- Weight loss
- Weakness
- Blindness
- Poor skin condition
While there’s no known cure for diabetes, it can be managed with insulin injections, diet modification and careful blood monitoring. However, this disease remains a serious, life-threatening condition.
