HEAD: September XX (third Saturday of September) is National Responsible Pet Ownership Day
Adopting a pet is an amazing, life-changing experience for both you and your animal of choice. Pets give us love, companionship, care, cuddles and much, much more. We’ve all heard the saying “with great power comes great responsibility”—whoever came up with that quote was likely thinking about pet ownership.
Are you a responsible pet owner? If you’re reading this veterinary newsletter, that means that you are taking your pet to the vet, which is a good start. Along with sending your pet to us, the experts, to take care of their health, here are other things that very good pet owners are doing. Give yourself a “round of appaws” if you are:
- Embracing your pet as a member of the family. All pets (especially dogs) need companionship, as they are pack creatures who cherish the love and warmth that comes with being a welcome member of your household.
- Constantly making sure your house is pet-proof. Pets can get bored and curious, and it’s extremely important to make sure that dangerous household items are kept safely stored away from curious paws. Garbage cans should also be pet-proof, as well as your yard and the rest of your pet’s kingdom.
- Keeping your animal up-to-date on their veterinary care. Regular annual vet visits (twice a year for senior pets) help us manage your pet’s well-being and check for the possibility of any underlying diseases.
- Properly keeping track of your pet with a microchip and/or ID tag. Pets often get lost, and microchips are a safe and affordable way to make sure your best friend can always be tracked down in case they get lost.
- Giving your pet regular exercise. This helps our animal companions stay fit and healthy, and without proper exercise, your pet may act out and develop negative behavioral issues.
- Feeding your pet properly. It’s important to make sure you aren’t over- or under-feeding your pet or constantly giving them people food. It’s also crucial to make sure you are giving them clean, fresh water regularly.
While the above is not a comprehensive list of things that make you a responsible pet owner, they are just some of the things you can do to keep your best friend happy and healthy. Of course, the most important thing you can do is love your pet, as that love encompasses all of the above and much, much more!
