Video is the highest engaging content out there. It’s the most prevalent and easiest to consume with short-form platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels.
How To Create Your First TikTok
-
Press the + button to start recording
-
In the recording screen, you will see a vertical row of buttons on the right side of the screen. These control the video effects, speed and settings.
-
At the top you will see a musical note which is where you can add a trending sound or music.
-
In the bottom right, there is an ‘upload’ icon where you can use pre-recorded video from your phone library, OR you can
-
In TikTok, you can add multiple clips and choose the music, and the app will automatically edit the piece for you. Alternatively, you can use apps like InShot or Splice to edit a video, and upload the finished video.
Prior to publishing, you can set privacy for who can watch your video, allow comments, duet (other users can record a video side by side with this one), stitch (other users can record a video using parts of yours), and saving the edited video to your device. You can also add hashtags and tag friends.
All About Reels
The Instagram interface is very similar to TikTok with the navigation bar and option to upload photos and pre-recorded video on the left side. The current time limit is 15 seconds (while TikTok has now allowed for 60 seconds or 3 minutes as well). The benefits of using Reels are that even people who don’t follow you can see and engage with your reels. Both TikTok and Reels have been shown to increase audience growth.
-
Step 1: Select your music, speed, and filters
-
Step 2: Shoot your video (in the app or as a pre-recorded video)
-
Step 3: Hit share!
Once you are happy with your edited video, you can share to Reels only (which will appear as a separate section in your feed) or post to your feed and reels. This will give your video more reach and live on for longer. Either way, you will need to pick a “cover” image, that best represents the video. You can tag friends, but Reels does not currently have the Duet or Stitch feature in their interface.
