HEAD: The Dangers of De-Icers
As it gets colder, many businesses and homeowners protect themselves from icy sidewalks with de-icers.
Most sidewalk de-icers are full of chemicals that are dangerous to our pets. The most common ones are made of calcium carbonate, calcium magnesium acetate, or chloride salts of potassium, magnesium, and sodium. Calcium-based salts are the most hazardous if they are ingested or even if they just rest on the skin, as they can cause severe irritation.
Urea-based de-icers are often labeled “pet safe,” and while they do cause less irritation, they are not quite as efficient at melting ice.
To avoid problems with de-icers, rinse paws with water after walks and any other jaunts outside during the winter.
